Six Secrets of Composition

What makes a 3D model tick? Why are we fascinated by certain models, whereas others just leave us cold?
Like it or not, some just look better than others. Though difficult to measure, the rules of attraction are nevertheless real. By naming and befriending them, you can start aligning your own models to them.
In this fearless workshop, visual designers Felix Heuman and Anders Lyhagen from Swedish 3D studio Holygon dare pose some hard questions about soft but significant targets. Where other workshops teach merely how to build, this one wants to go further and uncover why.
Aesthetic success is subject to general principles. These need to balance. Is balance boring? Not if the stakes are high. Dare you confront these mystical attractors? Then this workshop is for you.

NOTE: For this class you will need your own computer running SketchUp 2021/2022 Pro.

Construction Documents with Nicholas Sonder

Intimidated by the idea of using SketchUp and LayOut to design and document a complex, custom home? Overwhelmed by the endless number of extensions available? Learn how to manage a complex project using multiple model references and minimal extensions. Then, define a level of detail that enables fast design changes throughout the life of your project. Use templates and scrapbooks in ways in which you’ve never thought of before. Produce beautiful section cuts, floor plans, and details of your SketchUp models that look great and communicate clearly from schematic design, all the way through construction documentation. If you’ve attended this workshop before, you can expect to both practice and expand these workflows, as they are introducing new material based on improvements in SketchUp and the upcoming release of the second edition of SketchUp and LayOut for Architecture.

Get Hands-On with Layout

LayOut may appear simple, but don’t be fooled: it’s the gateway to creating compelling presentations and any detail or construction documents that you need. Most of your work is done within SketchUp; you just need to set up models to ensure that they give you the results that you want when dropped into drawing sheets.
In this workshop, Paul Hensey -- an experienced SketchUp user, SketchUp Visiting Professional and landscape enginee -- will introduce an efficient workflow for generating professional documents in LayOut.
The workshop will cover:
- Setting up the SketchUp model
- Organizing your model with compontnets, groups, tags and scenes
- Creating custom templates and drawing sheets
- Multiple views in a page
- The power and efficiency of scrapbooks across any project
- Organizing reference files
- Capturing design changes and issuing drawing updates.

NOTE: For this class you will need your own computer running SketchUp 2021/2022 Pro and LayOut.

Modeling for Permit Drawings

As a professional designer, you need a predictable approach to SketchUp that works for any project type; residential or commercial, new construction or renovation, interior design or architecture. During this workshop you’ll learn how to sort your designs by LEVEL / ELEMENT / LOCATION / CONDITION to unlock a wider array of line weights and dynamic hatches, create consultant backgrounds, and make modeling easier. This is easily accomplished with Model Organization Guides (MOG's). With Model Organization Guides (MOG's) you will never have to make nested groups or assign tags ever again! You will also create CAD, Color, and Sketch styles, apply them to scenes, and ultimately create scaled architectural drawings in LayOut. If you are looking for an overview of a proven SketchUp workflow for architecture and interior design, look no further than this workshop!

NOTE: For this class you will need your own computer running SketchUp 2021/2022 Pro and LayOut.

Just Do the "Fun" Part: How to use SketchUp to create a market for residential schematic design

Brenda Skeel’s company has developed a SketchUp process to do small scale, small budget architecture that clients love. Brenda designed a workflow built with basic native SketchUp tools that focuses on the schematic design phase of residential projects to make good design more available and affordable to the average homeowner.  Unsurprisingly, it is remarkably effective to collaborate with the client in the design process (the “Fun Part”) to facilitate better communication and achieve better results. The process is both valuable and accessible for homeowners and can be flexible and profitable for the architect. In this session, Brenda will use case studies and sample projects to walk through her processes to deliver real-time schematic design solutions and sub-contracted design services built entirely on the SketchUp Pro platform. Expect to walk away with a better idea of how SketchUp can help you deepen client engagement, set better expectations, and create superior design outcomes.

Setting a Firm Standard

We all LOVE using Sketchup, but often our peers make the workflow exhausting. Setting a firm standard helps to not only have everyone operate better, but also makes the transition of handing models from one person to another seamless.
At Neumann / Smith Architecture, Clayton and Trent have worked together to set the firm standard for Sketchup. On their design team of 14, they have helped to elevate the rest of their team to their level of skill. This has not only streamlined workflow, but has reduced file size and billable hours to save more time fordesign (Yay)!
In this presentation you will learn how to:
- Set an office standard to streamline workflow
- Integrate Sketchup / LayOut to work better in a presentation workflow
- Create SketchUp and LayOut templates for your firm

SketchUp for Cabinet Makers: From Concept to Construction

SketchUp is widely used by woodworkers to develop a 3D concept, and translate it into buildable parts. But can it really meet the demands of a professional cabinet shop? Yes! In this session, you will learn how Freebird Interiors use SketchUp for built-in cabinetry designs, and how it compares to far more expensive options designed for this industry. You will learn how to:
Close the gap between concept sketch and production-ready drawings.
Start designing using cutlist-ready components.
Set up a template with scenes and visibility controls for quick production of detailed views for both customer and workshop (Sketchup is a 3D communication tool!).
Export cutting diagrams, bills of materials and more, using the CabinetSense extension and Cutlist Plus.
This session builds a foundation of understanding for moving up to professional CNC nesting capability.

The Way of the Wise SketchUp Interior Designer

Many interior designers have plugins that help them improve their speed, shortcuts that help them navigate their models efficiently, and workflows that eliminate duplication or make-work. These processes are their SketchUp wisdom, accumulated from experience across many projects.
In this presentation, Joanne of Swisterski Design, a Toronto-based interior design company, reveals the 'secrets' she's picked up over the years that help her churn out project after project, from construction documentation to Vray renderings. This session will break down SketchUp wisdom across:
- Shortcuts. Toolbars are handy, but SketchUp takes off when you adopt shortcuts that help you get the most of your keyboard, moving in SketchUp more at the pace of your design thinking.
- Model management and triage. Are you weighing down your model with polygon-heavy furniture pieces and high res materials? Joanne will review life-saving extensions and when to deploy them.
- Working and presenting tight spaces. Interior design is often, inherently, inside, often leading to camera-crippling navigation experiences. What are the best ways to manage these spaces for model making and presentation?
